Thoughts late at night: When a friend asks for help, can we ask a few more questions?

It was almost 2 a.m., and I knew my parents would yell at me if they found out I was staying up late. They might even confiscate or smash my phone. Honestly, I didn't want to stay up late, and I'm not used to it because I know it's bad for me. But my mind was racing at that moment, and some things were harder to keep bottled up inside.

I was very surprised when my friend messaged me on WeChat asking to borrow money to repay a loan. A series of strange thoughts popped into my head. I worried that something had happened to her recently, and I wanted to ask her several times why she suddenly needed to repay the loan. I wondered why she couldn't save money. I even hesitated about how to phrase my long explanation so she wouldn't overthink it. But some of these thoughts just wouldn't come out.

I couldn't sleep because I couldn't understand it. I felt that since we were friends, if someone was in trouble, I should do my part to help, especially since she only asked to borrow money via WeChat and would repay me in cash. They say talking about money hurts feelings, and at that moment, I felt there was some truth to that. I don't like borrowing money from others, nor do I like lending money and then asking for it back.

This incident has made me wonder: when a friend asks for a favor, can we ask a few more questions? Would asking more questions make the other person overthink things, and might it affect our friendship?
