Life is full of firsts, and some of these firsts are unexpected. Tonight, as I recall, was my first time visiting my second uncle's house. Before, my second uncle's house and my house were very close, practically neighbors.
This afternoon, I also remember the first time I met my cousin at my grandma's house.
Because my grandma's TV was broken, my cousin and I had the opportunity to go to my second uncle's house with my grandparents. Since I hadn't been there much before, I made a big blunder when we were almost at my second uncle's new house. I stood at the wrong stairwell waiting for my grandparents, and my grandma scolded me. If I had known this would happen, I probably would have gone home after dinner, at least I wouldn't have felt so bad.
I felt terrible about it, and I wanted to say, "I didn't know!" But I controlled my emotions and suppressed my dissatisfaction. Arguing with the two elders was something I disdained, especially since my grandma usually took such good care of my cousin and me. Finally, I thought, "It's done now." Although I made a fool of myself, perhaps it can prevent any awkward situations from happening next time I visit my second uncle. Thinking about this, I couldn't help but sigh to myself, "I'm probably the only one in the world who doesn't know where their relatives live!"
Following my grandparents, I arrived smoothly at my second uncle's new house. My cousin opened the door, and I gave her the pumpkin I was carrying because Grandma said my cousin, my second uncle's son, liked it. My cousin took the pumpkin and warmly welcomed us.
Inside, my cousin was there too. As my cousin had said, their fabric sofa did indeed have a cooling mat, making it quite comfortable. My cousin was playing on his phone on the sofa. He seemed a little surprised to see us, but he was also very welcoming.
My cousin moved chairs for my grandparents, poured water, and set up the TV. I, however, felt quite awkward. This was truly my first time visiting my second uncle's new house, and remembering the arguments my second aunt and mother had had when I was little, I felt a sense of unease facing my second aunt. At that time, my second uncle and aunt hadn't returned home yet, and the family hadn't eaten dinner. Of my grandmother's four granddaughters, I used to be the most introverted and quiet. Although my personality has changed somewhat, my nature remains the same.
Since I was visiting my second uncle's new house, I figured I should behave myself and watch TV with my grandparents, even though I sometimes found watching TV quite boring. But my phone was low on battery, so I couldn't use it. What I didn't expect was that my mother would call suddenly, just as my second uncle and aunt returned home.
Seeing them both home at the same time surprised me, and I felt a little panicked about my aunt, but I still politely addressed her as "Second Aunt." I don't know if my mother on the other end of the line heard me, but I quickly told her the truth: "Mom, my phone's dead. Let's talk later, okay?" My phone did indeed have about 20% battery left and wouldn't last much longer.
My mother agreed and hung up. Then we continued watching TV. Besides my second uncle and aunt, an elderly woman, a complete stranger to me, also came to visit at my second uncle's new home.
My second aunt seemed surprised to see us, but her attitude was surprisingly kind. She proactively asked my sister and me if we wanted to eat at her house, and offered me grapes from the coffee table. For a moment, I didn't know how to respond. I could only obey her and obediently sit on the fabric sofa, eating grapes. But when it came to eating, I declined, because I honestly told her I had already eaten dinner at my grandmother's house.
At my second uncle's new house, I watched TV, saw a family photo of my second uncle's family on the coffee table under the TV, ate grapes, weighed myself, and looked into my cousin's room. On the way back from my second uncle's house, I realized my sandals weren't on properly, and I got scolded again. By the time I got back, the rain had stopped, but the furniture store downstairs was still showing a movie.
Back home, I finally felt less nervous. It really is true what they say: there's no place like home. No matter how nice other people's homes are, they're never as good as your own, especially since your own home isn't bad either. However, it seems my sister's key is at my second uncle's house. After calling twice and not getting an answer, I sent her a WeChat message asking her to keep an eye out for my sister's key and, if she saw it there, to bring it down when she comes to my grandmother's for porridge the next morning.
My feelings are complicated today. I talked to a friend about what happened, and she said it's okay, that it's just an awkward situation, and next time it won't be so awkward, and told me to relax. But I really can't relax right now, so I'm writing this to vent my feelings.
Okay, that's all for now. Goodnight!
